The National Building Code of Canada (NBC) provides the national model-code framework and references CSA S136 for the structural design of cold-formed steel members. Since building requirements and regional conditions vary across Canada, provinces and territories may either adopt the NBC or adapt it with their own amendments. For any CFS project, what ultimately matters is the building code in force where the project is being built.

What Building Code Governs CFS Framing in Canada?

Understanding CFS code requirements in Canada starts with the National Building Code of Canada (NBC), which provides the model framework Canadian jurisdictions use to regulate building design and construction. It sets minimum requirements for areas such as structural safety, fire protection, building performance, and occupant safety, while also referencing technical standards for specific materials and systems, including cold-formed steel.

Does the Same Building Code Apply Across Every Province?

Not exactly. Some provinces and territories adopt the NBC with relatively few changes, while others publish their own building codes based on the national model. Adoption dates can also differ, meaning a newly published NBC edition may not immediately apply everywhere in Canada. Contractors and designers should therefore confirm the current building code for the province or territory where the project is located before relying on a national code edition.

For example, CFS projects in Ontario need to be evaluated under the Ontario Building Code and the standards it references, rather than relying on the NBC alone.

How Do Project Characteristics Affect CFS Code Requirements?

The requirements change according to the characteristics of the building project, not simply because cold-formed steel is being used. Factors such as building size and height, occupancy, structural loads, fire-safety requirements, environmental conditions, and the complexity of the structural system all influence which provisions apply.

These differences become especially visible in commercial CFS framing, where long spans, taller walls, unusual geometry, and different occupancy conditions can substantially change the structural design requirements.

What Is CSA S136 and Why Does It Matter for CFS Framing?

CSA S136 is the structural design standard referenced by the NBC for cold-formed steel members in Canada. In practical terms, it gives engineers the rules used to determine whether CFS profiles and other structural components can safely carry the loads expected in a building.

The standard addresses several key design factors:

  1. Member strength: the load a CFS member can safely resist.

  2. Buckling: the risk of a member becoming unstable under compression.

  3. Deflection: how much a member can bend or move under load.

  4. Connections: how CFS members are fastened and transfer forces between one another.

  5. Material properties: the characteristics of the steel used in the structural design.

These requirements help engineers select appropriate member sizes, thicknesses, and configurations for the conditions of each project.

The same structural requirements apply whether CFS members are fabricated conventionally or through an automated system such as FRAMECAD; what changes is how the engineering information is carried into manufacturing and assembly.

In other words, while the building code establishes the performance a structure must achieve, CSA S136 provides the technical design rules used to demonstrate that the CFS framing can meet those requirements.

CSA S136 is the main structural design standard for CFS in Canada, but other standards may apply to the materials and framing products used on a project. Contractors do not necessarily need to work directly with each standard, but understanding their different roles makes project specifications and compliance documents easier to interpret.

What Code Compliance Doesn't Guarantee

Meeting the applicable CFS standards does not automatically make the entire building assembly compliant. A steel profile may satisfy its material and structural requirements, while the completed wall, floor, or roof still needs to meet separate requirements for fire resistance, acoustics, moisture control, and thermal performance. In CFS assemblies, that includes controlling thermal bridging through appropriate detailing and coordinating insulation, air and vapour control, and moisture management as part of the overall building envelope.

Code compliance also does not replace project-specific engineering or approval. Loads, connections, openings, building geometry, and local conditions still need to be considered as part of the final design. In prefabricated CFS construction, coordinating those decisions before fabrication is also a central part of the DfMA process.
